That is exactly what I meant. Did the experts, the geneticists tell you that breeding selectively for health, to test and breed only phenotypically clear dogs, did NOT make for healthier dogs?
Laura Trunk ---------------------------------- Laura, the above gives a better POSSIBILITY of healthier dogs, it does NOT guarantee that you will get healthier dogs. While testing and culling for one or more defects, you could be setting a different equally bad defect into your line. I am sure that every breeder has had a litter where the possibility of a particular recessive exhibiting itself in the litter was 25%, while the actual litter contained 75% affected puppies. Genetics tell you what the odds are, but breeding dogs is still a gamble. Some days you win and some days you lose. What most of the anti-bragging people are against is the propaganda that health testing guarantees healthy puppies. It doesn't. It tends to reduce the number of defective puppies, but it does not guarantee anything. DNA tests guarantee healthy puppies and, the last I heard, there were no DNA tests for the major defects in Cavaliers.
