Glenn The most effective treatment for tear stains I have found is Lecithin. It is a natural soya product and works to balance the body fats and fluids. I find that I get tear staining when puppies are around eight to ten months old and I put this down to the larger back teeth coming in. They are usually over it by the time they are a year to eighteen months old.
I have had tear staining in adults also, and the Lecithin still works for as long as you need it. I have not had any side effects from using it short or long term. It comes as granules that you can just add a pinch in their food, or as liquid form in gelatine capsules. You can buy them from most health food stores. To lift the stains out there are several suggested methods. One I was given years ago was to mix a little corn flour with water to make a paste and then to put that on the stains.
