I do know that in the case of our nine week premie human child (who
survived and is now almost thirteen years old) the lung surfactant
hadn't sufficiently developed; he was in NICU for six weeks and special
care for six weeks.  Girls born in that time having been that premature
were going home a week after birth.  I was told that the lung surfactant
doesn't develop in males until later in gestation; almost in the last
weeks.  The surfactant study that was going on was just about that time,
but we missed being on the protocol as my son was too big and strong (at
3 1/2 pounds birthweight!).

What I'm wondering is if this is also true of canines.
