I have a cheap Olympus D-360L and it works just great. The majority of
pictures on my website were taken with it. I also took a picture of my son
one night for a school project, and printed it out on my very cheap Epson
printer (only $60!) and everyone thought it was a regular photograph taken
by a decent quality camera with film. I have taken pictures of puppies
holding the puppy in one hand, my camera in the other and they turned out
very clear.

The pictures of Lenny on my website (Ch. Roycroft Top Notch) were taken at
the Crown Classic shows--inside a HUGE, poorly lighted building. The head
shot I was only 10 feet away. The other two shots were taken while he was
inside the ring with his owner. With his right side picture I was about
10-15 feet away, his left side I was 15-20 feet away and *zoomed* in with my
software program. I lost a little quality doing so (it looks a tinch
blurry), but I think it is amazing how clear it still looked considering
everything.

In other words, I think even the cheap cameras work great for most people.
An expensive camera is not necessary unless you have much higher
expectations.
