Hi Myra, I have a boy that has his dewclaws on the front. At the time when they should have come off, he was too week and small and I didn't want to stress him in any way. He is 6 now and I have watched him playing with toys and chewing on bones and he has used his (thumb) to hold onto items while he was chewing. So yes, I believe they do use them.
