>For those who don't believe in annual checkups on your dogs--how often do >you go to the doctor for an annual checkup on yourself?
>Dogs age more quickly than we do. An annual complete examination is more >like one every 4 or 5 years for humans. I could never let myself go 4 or 5 >years without a complete checkup! So I believe that an annual examination >for dogs is essential! It is the minimum I should do for my dogs. Laura, I can certainly understand where your reasoning comes from, however, I don't find the medical profession, human or animal does a thorough enough job to warrant a yearly physical. I find with DRS of both kind, unless you go in with a good feeling of what may be wrong, they either find nothing or disagree with what you think. For example, I recently took a young pup in for a UTI, I knew what she had, they did a slide, then decided it was unusual for a puppy, better send it off-of course that meant a whole day to collect urine. Results came back indicating she had most common cause, easily treated-something this vet should have seen right away-but missed for some reason. I think to get more revenue to pay for very expensive new award winning building. I have had plugged sebaceous pores (in dogs) misdiagnosed as tumors to be removedd surgically! They can be popped like a pimple -never to return. Typical annual exams on dogs never include something you cannot see for yourself. If my dogs are off in any way, I keep a very close eye on them and they go in immediately if necessary. I think if you know your animals-weight, personality, lumps, bumps etc. you know how they are most of the time. Mine have all died really old-must be doing something right! I am very skeptical of most medical professionals. They have their place, but they are only human and should not be looked at like Gods with all the answers.
