Actually, a small gene pool becomes an almost unfathomable problem if every dog is a carrier for the same autosomal recessive trait. Dominant traits are visible, or expressed, but recessives are hidden with no known tests to detect them. In-breeding is a good way to double up on the autosomal recessives and create some really large problems in a hurry. Remember the laws that forbade sisters and brothers and first cousins from getting married in a lot of countries? It is the status of the autosomal recessive traits that created, to some degree, the need for those laws. Myra Savant
