Actually, a small gene pool becomes an almost unfathomable problem if every
dog is a carrier for the same autosomal recessive trait.  Dominant traits
are visible, or expressed, but recessives are hidden with no known tests to
detect them.  In-breeding is a good way to double up on the autosomal
recessives and create some really large problems in a hurry.  Remember the
laws that forbade sisters and brothers and first cousins from getting
married in a lot of countries?  It is the status of the autosomal recessive
traits that created, to some degree, the need for those laws.  Myra Savant
