Leanne answered this much better than I can, but I would think that you
should say that your friends dogs don't display it. I suspect that this is
equivalent of what the worst case scenario of the Cavalier thrombocytopenia
would be. It would be like 100% of Cavaliers being born with asymptomatic,
idiopathic thrombocytopenia and a good percentage of them developing the
symptoms of the disease later. That is why it is important to test for
thrombocytopenia, so that you don't inadvertently breed the trait into all
of your dogs. Nothing ever stays the same in genetics, if all the breed were
homozygous for the trait, there would be many more who are affected and not
asymptomatic.

One thing to note about the Dalmatian problem, it is linked genetically to
the desired spotting pattern. That's why it permeated the breed. Breeders
bred for a conformation ideal and some bad stuff came with it genetically.
This is similar to the Russian fox breeders who wanted better temperament in
the foxes as they were so nasty that they were difficult to handle at the
fur farms. The result after 10 generations was a fox that no longer had the
desired fur and looked like a dog. This is in the latest ACKCSC newletter.
Genes for single traits are qrouped in chromosomes. When you breed for a
single obvious trait, you get all the genes that are carried on the
chromosome with that trait--- some good, some bad.

All the best,
Susan Cochran
