The reason that genetic traits that breeders are selecting FOR are not
completely consistent across a breed is that, for the most part, breeders
are selecting for "expressed" or visible qualities without knowledge of the
recessive qualities that are carried by the dog.  The reason that doubling
up on the recessive genes is so dangerous is because the dog then only
carries for that quality, much in the same way that blue eyed people can
only pass the gene for blue eyes.  As far as the old time breeders who were
doing the job right......Yeah.  And proof of that is the fact that pure bred
dogs have so many genetic diseases.  With the knowledge of genetics and
disease processes that is available to breeders today, they should be able
to start the work of breeding healthier dogs.  Myra Savant
