Hello ---

I would like to open the conversation on bites.

I checked the AKC Standard and the following is stated:
"Bite- a perfect, regular and complete scissors bite is preferred,
i.e.,
the upper teeth closely overlapping the lower teeth and set square
into the jaw. Faults -undershot bite, weak or crooked teeth,
crooked jaw."

I checked the CKCS CLUB USA Standard and the following is stated:
"Teeth: Strong and even, preferably meeting in a scissors bite,
although
a level bite is permitted. Undershot mouths are greatly to be
discouraged;
it should be emphasized, however that a slightly undershot bite in
an
otherwise well-balanced head with correct, sweet expression should
not
be penalized in favor of a level mouth with a plain or hard
expression.
Faults: Weak or Crooked teeth, crooked jaw."

In talking with other breeds, an undershot bite, can still be a Champion in
AKC.

In our training class, I was given suggestions on how to hide it from the
judge.
But I am not comfortable with this idea.

I have read several evaluations in THE BULLETIN, which dogs that have poor
bites can still win.

I just wanted to get your thoughts on this issue.

Thank you for your thoughts --

SUSAN REID
