hi donna,
tell the owner not to worry. yes it is immune related, but there are many
breeds that are prone to this and it seems to run in some lines.  what you
are describing is localized demodex which is the more common form and the
easiest to treat.  it is usually brought on by stress and once treated will
most likely never repeat itself. the localized form does not seem to cause
other immune problems later on in life.  bulldogs and shar peis, just to name
a couple, almost always develop the localized form as older puppies and there
is no evidence that it is life threatening as adults.
