Dear Sharona, Your dam is making things much harder for the babies survival. If I were you I would make her let the puppies nurse on a schedule. Hold her down if necessary and only let her at the puppies when you can watch. You need to either handle the puppies or better yet take a blusher brush (makeup brush for applying blush, it's a soft big brush) and brush over the puppies frequently to stimulate them . Mimic the direction and firmness of the dam licking them, from head toward the tail, along the top. They will gain weight faster if you do this. If you don't do it and the dam doesn't lick them, they will not do as well-- weight gain will be less. What you are doing with the blusher brush is mimicing the proper mothering that she should be giving them, but isn't.
