Dear Sharona, I agree with Judy up to a point, there is always the Mothers who are inexperienced and there is always the puppies that need a little bit of extra care. These puppies are not weak and grow up sickly, they can grow up to be robust and healthy. I never give up, I always try and maybe one out of 20 should have been left alone. I would rather be safe than sorry. In my first litter of labs (only ever had three) there was a little one who always needed extra care, when the rest of the puppies (13) were 7 pounds this little guy weighed about 2.5 pounds. I hand fed him, he grew up to be the largest in the litter, a little larger than his father and lived to 13.5, in good health. I did not place him because at the time my vet had the mind set that I should leave nature alone and he probably had something wrong with him, so he stayed with us his whole life. He was a great dog.
