Glenn
I frequently recommend that people go ahead and board their dogs at a
kennel. I know it seems terrible to the owners, but it really is not.
Most dogs adjust really quickly and get along just fine.
The key is to leave them when they are young, preferably. Once they
have been left and learn that you will be returning, they cope quite
nicely - usually. Leaving them with a kennel - either an established
boarding facility or your local vet - they will be supervised ALL DAY,
with activity all day, people & critters moving about all day. They may
be alone at night, but then they should be asleep then <grin> Also, if
they do have a problem, the people caring for them will be better
trained / have more experience in what to do, what they need, etc.

You never know, none of us do, when we will have an emergency and NEED
to leave our pets somewhere - if they have been left before, it will
reduce their stress level when they get 'dropped off' when you are
stressed yourself - obviously a more stressful situation --
Or they might have the emergency requiring them to be left at the vet's
office - due to illness or injury -- again - it will be stressful enough
due to the emergency, whatever it is - having them 'know' what being
boarded is all about reduces their stress about that part of the program.

Just my ideas --
Hope you have a great trip!
