As a owner-handler who has beaten well-known handlers in the boxer ring, I
have to add that in many cases owner-handlers can and do win, some breeds
are just harder than others, and boxers are one of the hardest. I have
participated in the AKC breed ring for many years and has observed many
breeds being shown, and my observations are that in most cases the handlers
do a better job of presentation, giving the judge a better opportunity to
see the best qualities of their dogs. One of the things I've noticed in my
limited observations of the Cavalier ring is that owner handlers frequently
can't even set up their dogs properly on the table, much less get them to
stand still in a free bait for even seconds so that the judge can get a
really good look at them. And they seem to be unable to move their dogs in
a straight line out and back from the judge. If owner handlers want to be
competitive against professional handlers they have to show their dogs at
least as well. That said, yes, a competent owner-handler with a quality dog
will loose occasionally to a professional handler with a lesser quality dog
under certain judges. But over the long run, that owner-handler team will
win more often than not.
