Shouldn't proper Cavalier type include structure and movement? And I'm not sure what a "sporting dog look" means. As one who comes from a working dog background and who has a Cavalier in obedience and agility training, I have a real problem with judges that focus only on a pretty face, "correct markings", lovely coat and great attitude, to the exclusion of physical soundness. The standard calls for a topline that is "level both when moving and standing" and gait should be "free moving and elegant in action, with good reach in front and driving rear action." It also says that the Cavalier should be "an active, graceful, well-balanced toy spaniel." In my sometimes not so humble opinion, a Cavalier is not "typey" without the attributes mentioned above. And, yes, there are judges that don't seem to be able to find the "best" dog for various reasons; however, to generalize some bad judging to all AKC judges is not reasonable. There are some very good judges out there, regardless of the breed. And if it is felt that overall AKC judges don't understand this breed, then the Parent Club as well as local clubs should be setting up judging seminars all over the country and helping judges new to this breed learn what they need to know about it.
