Terrie The stud book number is recognition of the quality of the dog or bitch as the open and limit classes are usually very difficult competition. Getting the Stud Book number means that they are qualified to enter Crufts every year without the need to qualify ever again. Without the Stud Book number a dog would need to qualify each year.
You can gain the Stud Book number if you go Best in Show at an all breeds open show I believe, though stand to be corrected. Otherwise it is at Championship Shows in the specified classes that Annette mentioned or by gaining Junior Warrant.
