Actually, Judy, white corn meal and grits are totally different. Grits are made from ground dried hominy which is corn that has been soaked in lye. White corn meal is just ground corn. It does make a difference in the taste, consistency, and the preparation options.
However, white corn meal can be used to prepare a breakfast dish similar to grits, but eaten more like a cereal such as oatmeal (with butter, milk, and sugar). This dish is called cornmeal mush. The difference between cornmeal mush and grits is similar to the difference between cream of rice cereal and cooked rice. BTW, to keep this dog related, my Cavaliers like both grits and rice cereal:-) However, they are adore my grits casserole and it is the favorite of humans and doggies alike.
