Yes, Judy, it is made for white corn. In the old days when people lived on
farms, there had to be a way for families to eat dried corn kernels during
the long winters as all food was grown at home. Hominy is corn kernels
soaked in lye water to remove the hulls and make the kernel puff up and be
eatable. It is sort of a wet way to pop the hull whereas popcorn is a dry
heat way to pop the hull off so you can eat the dried corn. All the lye is
rinsed out of the food before it is eaten.

In those days, the hominy was allowed to dry again after the hull was popped
off , coarsely ground and this made hominy grits. I  think that grits are
made differently now, perhaps just using the endosperm of the kernel and
grinding coarsely.
