Aloha-
All I know is that 1.) all my Cavaliers are fab. retrievers and 2.) very birdy. My
old girl, Ch. Cordial Demeanor (Crisdig and Fitzarran on the top,
Grantilley and Toraylac bottom) sits in the blinds with us while field training the
Goldens and brings out the chukkars and pigeons the big dogs can't find
in heavy cover-she sits in my lap, trembling and moaning, just waiting for one of the
Goldens to get called off the mark so she can rush in the bush and
drag it back. The ducks are, alas, too big to handle, though she did swallow a young
duck the Abysinian cat had brought in a while back-gulped it right
down before we could rescue it. She can water retriever the ducks (if they are not too
"used" to float), but get's stuck once she hits land. I have a
wonderful picture of her, amisdt a pack of Goldens, all wet and covered in burrs-I
call it "camo-cavalier".
Her daughter (Elvenhome on top) will retrieve anything that is not bigger than
herself and climbs the gargage shelving to get to the supply of training
wings (she does Agility on a more legal level, also). All her pups have been ball
retrievers since they could get their mouths around them.
Hope (Prestonville on the top, Elvenhome bottom) is difficult to show at outdoor
shows because she gets focusued on a bird, ANY bird, and forgets she's in
the ring-I use said training wings in those show situations. She has dispached many a
gecko, and even workes tandum with the black farm cat in lizard hunts
(this cat is useless at anything but lizards, unfortunately).
I can honestly say that the Cavaliers have been more birdy consistantly than many of
the Goldens I've trained over the years...they certainly have been
MUCH better in obedience work-don't try to "make it interesting" like some smart
Goldens will, but just work happy and consistant (once they "get it").
We always take a Cavalier along on field jaunts-small enough to hide in a crate with
the big ones, so you don't get charged at the site, and oh so much
fun to watch. But oh! what a chore to clean up afterwards!
