Cavaliers are very much like this, although some are better "natural"
retrievers. I think it has more to do with the basic natural instincts of
the breed rather than what breeding strains they come from.

 My two old girls will will retrieve a ball readily, and the 12 and a half
year old will eat a bird if she catches it (and she has caught one or two
thru the years.  My black and tan bitch is crazy for birds (and silly me, I
named her 'My Blackbird') and her mother is crazy for birds and her
grandmother killed a young woodchuck AND a bird or two in her younger days.

My first Great Pyrenees used to bark at jet planes flying over my house, and
he always "looked" to be sure it was a plane and not a bird, which he never
barked at or noticed much. <G>
