Agreed, it would have to be the official AKC parent club but the most common
afflictions would be the ones to be targeted, one can't become so
restrictive that the thing is viewed as impossible. Eyes, hips and hearts
seem to be the prime concerns health-wise for Cavaliers. And one assumes
that caring breeders re-test annually now, the only difference would be that
they would be lumped together with all the others who share their concerns.
As far as auto-immune, most breeds have some incidence and there have been
myrid articles written about it but until there is a noticible incidence of
deaths/severe illness it would not be practical to be so restrictive.
Obviously, a panel would have to all agree (VBG) on requirements
(championships, or perhaps only half the required points with maybe 2
Reserves to majors...something within reason, a placement at a
National...??). Yes, many wonderful producers were not finished, but i have
always wondered that bitches with imperfections that keep them from at least
a title are breedable, but the dogs of the same quality are not? The answer
is that standards are lower for girls becauise they can give us puppies
after a visit with a male. A poor quality male only gets used by his
besotted owner and/or their friends (cheap!). But the big picture here is to
have the best examples of the breed that can be attained. Those that don't
qualify, don't. There would still be the legitimate papers for them, if the
breeders want to go on with them, that would be their business. It is just
an idea to raise the bar a bit, not a 'law' written in stone. Do not we all
want to do better? We all keep trying in our own way(s). Just thoughts.
