I think that PennHip measures the hip laxity and not so much the hip
structure as OFA does. Most researchers use OFA as the gold standard for
evaluating a hip for dysplasia while they use PennHip for hip laxity. I have
an article from the Cornell Canine Genetics course that I took several years
ago. The article deals with the mode of inheritance of HD and it seems to be
a combination of structure and laxity. One point that they mentioned is that
the hip laxity alone does not cause HD while structure alone does. That is
why they considered the OFA as the better of the two tests.
