Laura, This is a good question and I have to say that I really believe that if things keep going the way that they are, that greed will be the death of this breed.
I do not believe that we should keep raising the prices up and up...it is insane. Who, but the elite will be able to afford these prices?? When I sell a puppy, I don't look to see what the 'going price' in my area is...I try to think about what a family can realistically afford in my area. It is more important to me to see that my pup ends up in a good, loving, caring home than to see "how much" I can get for it. I do not sell on co-ownerships (well, maybe once....<G>...but it is to a very dear friend who wanted it that way and really didn't need to have a co-ownership...) and I do not ask for puppies back. I know that is not the norm in Cavaliers, but it is the way that I sleep better at night..<grin>. The only thing that I stipulate in a contract is that if ever the puppy/dog needs to be rehomed, that it either comes back to me, or I will help them find a good home for it, that the new owner will provide the necessary heath upkeep and to provide a loving home for the pup. I worry for this breed here in the states. With the high prices that the dogs now command, they are a very attractive dog, to every kook that wants to breed dogs to make money. When money is the bottom line in breeding, breeders start to make questionable choices. We heard of a horrendous story on another breeders list this week about a breeder's bad decision, that could have possibly been financially motivated. It truly troubles me.
