You are right--that could be considered *strings*.  I never thought of that
simply because my pet people can't WAIT to get their pets neutered!  In fact
when I've had an iffy puppy that I thought might turn out, the owners begged
me to let them neuter their *pets* even before I gave the okay!   So just
doesn't seem like *strings* to me.
