A well known Norwegian breeder who is also a vet mainly in research, told me that there were at least 2,000 genetic defects in dogs....some very serious and some not. It is simply impossible to test for all of them. If a breed has a really serious problem that has a high rate of incidence, then it behooves breeders to test their dogs to try to eliminate it from the breeding pool. One can't do that with all diseases, however, because there are some that have no valid test.
