Myra...In that study which was retrospective in nature, there are some problems with the selection (very small convenience) and standardization of the testing (some where from vet records of decreased dogs and other by examination)...BUT this is allowed in this type of design...in other words...when you see this design when you are performing a literature review, you know there is a danger of selection bias and other errors.
Retrospective studies are used to generated further questions for investigation...not to draw concrete universal conclusions. So Myra...you are correct in asking questions...that is how we generate thought for further investigations.
