Dr. Jacobs also said that you could not expect to see much of a change in the first two or three generations using this scheme (clear at age 3) whereas Dr. Swenson said that if you follow the protocol recommended at the Symposium (clear at 2-1/2 with both parents clear at 5), you can make a change in the first generation and a major impact in two or three generations. The protocol already took into account the necessity of not excluding so many dogs that other negative traits would be amplified or that new problems would be created. The good news is that, if the age of onset of MVD is increasing, there will be even more dogs that meet the protocol from which to choose and even less likelihood of amplifiying or creating other problems!
