Hi, Sheena,
I think I posted a response to this article on another list. I have
seen this reaction in one of my ponies......she could not be wormed by
conventional methods (which kill off a worm load all at once); she would
get violently ill immediately; it was life threatening to her. We put
her on Strongid C (daily horse wormer NOT indicated for dogs) and the
problem didn't reoccur. I do like and used Strongid C (or daily wormer)
on my horses for years....I felt it was easier on them to keep the worm
load from building in the first place.
That being said, I've only seen one such reaction over the years in
horses or dogs. It IS the reason I don't use any heartworm meds on
pregnant/lactating animals (and my vet concurs with this).....but
perhaps I should go to something like filarabits at that
time.......Claudia is right; it is not great to keep them not covered
for any length of time in this area.
