I've heard of lots of people who cover their crates with a piece of
wood, cover that with a tablecloth and use them as tables. Or, line
up several side by side, cover again with a plank and a cloth and use
as a display table.

I had scrubbable paper in our other house ..... washed like a dream
and they never chewed it. I think that's only a problem if there's a
loose edge to catch their attention.

The biggest "dog" change we made when we moved to this house
a couple of years ago was to get leather furniture and I've never
regretted it. Hair wipes right off, and it's easily wiped clean (and I
might add it's ivory). It even stands up to the claws of a 76 lb Golden
Retriever. I'll never go back to fabric. Even got it in the car for the same
reason.

We put our old fabric furniture in the family room, and I had slipcovers
made of a heavy twill that zip on and off for easy washing. But the leather
is much easier to care for than that.
