Re: Rimadyl - it is a pain reliever only because it is an anti-inflammatory
drug and works in the same way that alleve would work on a human. Pain
creates a lot of stress for all body systems involved whether dog or human
so it's best to relieve it. Aspirin even in small doses causes platelet
disturbances but is also an anti - inflammatory. Pain relievers that are
anti-inflammatories are desirable because they do not depress the
respiratory system, yet they get at the root of the problem. It is always
desirable to use rest in conjunction with these type of medications and this
can be easily achieved with crating. As far as liver damage is concerned,
the medication would have to be taken for a very long period of time and in
very high doses. Hope this helps clarify the issue. Kerry Turley, Nurse
Practitioner
