Re: CKCS Rear End Lameness, Lethargy

I have a Blenheim who has near-advanced MVD. Her murmur is a 5 out of six.
She is seven years old and on
Vasotec, and Furosemide. Sometimes she seems to go lame in the back legs
and can't stand. When this happens she licks constantly and her gums and
tongue are very pale. She does not seem to be in pain but she cannot stand.
She does not have convulsions or trembling or seizures. On visits to the
vet all blood work and xrays were normal, except for the size of her heart
which is enlarged. The vet seems to think that sometimes the enlarged heart
causes her to have less oxygen in her blood than she requires and the back
extremities are deprived first and so she sort of sinks down and cannot
move. Picking her up and holding her and sort of massaging her back seems
to help, but she recovers by herself as well. Bradycardia comes to mine
because her heart rate is very slow sometimes. Her heart is very enlarged
in the xrays -- you can see that it presses against her rib cage and her
throat and her lungs very definitely.
It is very sad, but this is MVD. She doesn't cough much but she does cough
more often now. She is exercise intolerant and has been since she was one
and 1/2 years old. Anyway, I guess my point is that it could be heart
related, but with my baby's rear end lameness there is no seizure, at least
not yet. We don't use flea collars and I am careful about pesticides. We
use heartguard for heart worms and Advantage for fleas and ticks, but I
apply less than is indicated and I haven't noticed that these problems occur
close to Advantage applications. Just wanted to share. Pam Quisling
