Winnie, I don't follow the protocol and the last visit to Dr. Jacobs all 13 Cavaliers cleared. If you throw out the 3 that were a year old, the average age was over 4 years-- some as old as 5, 6, and 7. I follow my own protocol of loading the pedigree with oldies and linebreeding to oldies. It seems to work very well. I have even heard of one of our boys who lives in Atlanta who is almost 17 years old.
I admit that I placed emphasis on temperament and health over looks until just recently although we do have some very pretty dogs as well. Also, I took a detour to study color genetics that lasted about 10 years and now I'm working on getting the looks for showing some of ours again, without sacrificing the health or temperament. It isn't easy as some of the show stock has been bred for looks over health and temperament and you never know it until you breed to them. In genetics, there is always more than one way to get from point A to point B. Some ways are faster, some ways are less risky, and some ways promote slow steady improvement, but there is always more than one way. It like using a gun. A rifle, a pistol, and a shotgun will all kill someone, but each has its advantages in certain situations.
