Wow, this is getting scary! The dialogue I thought sounded so promising the
other day is (once again!) deteriorating into finger-pointing and it even
sounds like the category of pet-owners is (uncharacteristically, for *some*
of you), getting thrown into "enemy camp"! (Say it isn't so!!!)
May I remind (some of) you that it was very recently claimed on this list
(not by me!) that pet-owners who acquired their Cavaliers from "anti-AKC
breeders" have been misled, and/or even lobbied, to take an anti-AKC
position. Given the outrageous things that are done/said in the name of
Cavaliers, I can believe that this too may be true -- of SOME individuals.
In which case, the real problem is that SOME BREEDERS do this.
I can understand if some of you feel frustrated with the anti-AKC position
of SOME BREEDERS. Maybe you feel you can't change it. But it seems to me
(and I know I may be nave about this), that THIS is where the problem lies.
If most puppies in most litters are sold as pets, doesn't that mean that a
breeder is likely to be in a much better position to reach and influence
more pet-owners, than most pet-owners are?? I have a hard time seeing the
logic that would justify vilifying pet-owners in general. Yes, as many of
you already know, I'm one of those creatures, and proud to be one... :)
I've already stated publicly how I would vote, but I'm just one person. I
know not every pet-owner is willing to spend the time to do their own
learning, but there are some (on this list and probably elsewhere) who do.
I think you will have a better chance of obtaining the outcome you seek if
everyone can chill out about pet-owners and *stay focused* on trying to
sustain a *reasoned* and *civil* discussion with the *breeders* with whom
you disagree.
Myra, I'm gonna get a cigarette!
Laura, thanks for asking us "pet members" a question; my answer is NO -- on
the basis of what I've read over the last 3 years from you and others who
study genetics and have bred for many years. But as interested as I am in
those posts, it'll always be "book-learning" to a pet-owner, which is why
I've said repeatedly that I think decisions affecting breeding should be
left up to breeders!!
