The OFA database separates the animals that are permanently identified from those that are not by marking the ones that are not identified. It is sort of like the "Regis" in the CKCSC.
If I were you, Dave, I'd have them tattooed or microchipped. Your vet can do it when you have the dog x-rayed. You never know when you will need to be able to prove the identity of your dog. I read recently of a dog that was returned to its owner several years after it was stolen due to a microchip.
