Well, I've used the serum progesterone tests for warm live breedings that didn't work. I have had really odd numbers come out of the process. The lab is at Tuft's.....actually they have two labs there. I'd get a 3ng reading early in the season (baseline) and rush to breed only to find that on repeat testing the level was (where we thought it should be) under 2. It was expensive to do repeatedly and didn't improve the odds for us, I thought. In the case in which I am talking, the stud is fertile as he sired a litter in April of 4 pups. I never use the target (in house) tests, so I am talking about serum progesterone.
Lee Jones was on Joybreeding for a while and told me that it is possible to get strange results like that because some progesterone level can be picked up which does not come from the follicles but from the lining? I didn't quite say that correctly, but basically........it can happen that way. It seemed to work better for me in horses, so I don't get it.
