I used Hawthorne extract (liquid, 6 drops 1x daily) for a Cavalier with MVD some years ago. I also supplimented with CO-Q10 and taurine. He lived for nearly 4 years after his diagnosis, and my feeling was that he was improved after adding the suppliments.
There was an article in JAVA recently regarding supplimentation of dogs and cats with CO-Q10, so I would venture to say that it has moved into mainstream veterinary medicine and out of the realm of voodoo! :-) The dose for a Cavalier is 30mg 1x daily. I am supplimenting all my dogs over the age of 4 years with it, in addition to their normal C and E, which I start at the age of 3 months and continue for life.
