Gil(who is a veterinary cardiologist for those who don't know him) said that
he hadn't seen any studies that made him think it would do any good for dogs
that had a murmur but were otherwise asymptomatic, or for prophylaxis(this
was in May 2002). He said to save my money, but it probably wouldn't do any
harm if I gave it to her, he just didn't recommend it. He may have read all
the articles, and decided, for any particular reason, that he didn't agree
with the study. He may not have liked all the parameters of the study, the
# in the studies, all sorts of reasons. Or he may not have read the studies
(don't know, but highly unlikely, most specialists keep up with about
everything in their fields).
As one who is in the medical field, and must read similar articles
every day, there are good and bad studies. For instance, not too long ago,
we thought that hormone replacement therapy would be the fountain of youth
for all menopausal women. These were THE experts in our field, the most
respected. Well, a recently published and much larger study blew that out
of the water. Before this, there were multiple studies from well-respected
institutions that indicated different results. This has changed the way MDs
and patients view hormones. Not the best time to be investing in drug
companies that have hormones as their #1 product....
I haven't read the studies on Co-Q, so I can't vouch for their
reliability. And honestly, it would take a group of vets in academic
medicine to vouch for the validity of any study, there are too many
variables that affect the outcome of a study. CoQ 10 may be good, it may be
harmless, I really don't know, I am just saying that Dr Jacobs is not a big
proponent of it for asymptomatic dogs or for prophylaxis. The fact that the
most recent article was in JAVA is good, but we had lots of hormone studies
in years past in JAMA and NEJM that were later proven faulty. I haven't
decided whether to give CoQ10 or not...I can certainly afford it, but want
to make sure it won't hurt my dog in any other way....

attorney, thank God I don't do that anymore!)
