I can't say for dogs, but we can use metronidizanole in pregnant human
patients after the first trimester, and probably could safely use it in the
first trimester, but generally don't because of what's in the PDR. There
have been studies (small ones) showing that is appears to be safe in the
first trimester, but few MDs are willing to use it since the PDR says
"wait". I'm not sure I would use it in a newborn puppy because it has a
side effect of causing nausea, which could cause weight loss with vomiting
in a puppy.
