My neighbor owns a pet beagle bitch (2 years old) named Max. Max and my 10+ month-old Teddy often play together in the fenced backyard. By human standards, I'd say they are best friends. About a month ago, Max developed an ear infection. My neighbor took her to to the vet, and she and the vet determined that it was puncture wounds from Teddy that caused the ear infection -- it was not an infection in the canal, but rather on the surface just before entering the ear. My neighbor showed me where the puncture wounds were, but I really couldn't see them. It just looked to me like a lot of dirty wax build-up outside of the entry to the ear canal. She complained to me that her vet bill and the antibiotic was over $100. I got the impression that she wanted me to pay it -- which I would have done if I was sure my Teddy had caused the problem.
That is my question to this list, because if the rough play that I've now observed has caused this problem, then I do believe that I should pay my neighbor's vet bills. I just don't know enough to know whether this *could* be the cause. I've seen Teddy and Max playing rough, and every now and then their teeth go to the ears in a way that could cause scratches. There have been no cries of pain from either of them, as my neighbor agrees. Teddy has been banned from playing with Max, with only a few exceptions -- two times in the last week or two. Tonight, my neighbor let me know that Max's ears are infected again, and that was her reason for not allowing Teddy to play with Max tonight. Could Teddy be the cause of Max's ear infections? When I look in her ears, all I see are some tiny red spots, and something that could be scabbing, or just dirt. The other ear looks clear. Are we dealing with a pirhana Cavalier named Teddy? Or some other kind of ear infection that seems to keep coming back? Any Beagle experts out there?. I'm trying to figure this one out by doing searches on the internet, but find I am wading through so much, so even if you could point me in the right direction, I'd so much appreciate that.
