Yes, from what I have researched, I must try another distro, as you have suggested. I would like to try Mandrake 8.2 as I have been advised this should work and you seem to have confirmed it below.

yes, try a different distro. apparently there are some motherboards that
MDK9.0 has problems with (this exact problem, actually). MDK8.2 worked on
them, as does (apparently) SuSe, Red Hat and others... so it seems to be a
MDK9.0 issue, probably to be fixed in 9.1 ... so, try a different distro
perhaps...
