You've got my curiosity now...

How do I load a new kernel into a running system?
Well you can't really. All your services would have to be disabled. It's technically a softboot.

To use it, you need to load the kmonte module in the running kernel. Then just run the monte program with the new kernel image (and any kernel options to be passed) as command line arguments. The machine softboots with the new kernel.

checkout Erik Hendriks' howto. http://www.scyld.com/products/beowulf/software/monte.html#toc2

Erik no longer works for SCYLD so there may be a newer version. BPROC, one of his other projects, is in SourceForge so you might want to check there.
