First of all I would like to apologize to our hard working moderator. I have been trying to ignore this thread but Andrew insists on continuing it and launching personal attacks again myself and other members of the group, so I feel compelled to respond. > Let's consider your math... > > 1) Only ~10 people respond, of what I'm told is a member list of ~60. 10 / > 60 = 1/6th of population. Regardless you seem to be the only one actively supporting the idea. How many of those 10 people are for or against the idea? Either way your butting heads with one of the fundamental problems with democracy. It would be great if the people could vote on every single issue that affects us, but it's just not feasible. So what we do is elect people that we think can make the best possible decision in our interests. I have already heard a couple of GLUGs elected officials come out and not only say that they are against it, but that the discussion is over. Like it or not. > 2) None of those who don't support the forum idea have given any reputable > rebutal to issues raised - it amounts to "I'd have to login...", or "I'm > quite comfortable just using email". Personal preference from people who > have little if any experience with forums... You assume that people make uninformed decisions. It looks like you are saying that everyone who comes out against the forum doesn't know what they're talking about. I don't know about the rest of the group but I take that as an insult. People have given you many good reasons why they wouldn't want a forum, so I'm not going to rehash them all again here. > Am I trying to sell you/CLUG a forum? This wasn't my idea in the first I only ask because when people fight a dead fight as hard as you are they usually have something to gain from it. > place - I carried it over from the meeting this past Wednesday. Heck, the > forum I mentioned was phpBB - a free forum. More likely the question is > 'Are you sure you just aren't afraid of change' or at least adding something No, I don't like change. That's not the point. The point is if it's not broke, why fix it. > to the mix that could be just as productive as the mailing list? Because > all I see is me supporting the idea of having a forum while getting flamed > by fearmongers and the occasional troll. Yes all you see is you supporting it because you are the only one. Doesn't that tell you anything? On the issue of flames, you are the one doing most of the flames. You are going around calling everyone immature and stupid, when your own posts are portraying yourself in that very light. > Fractioning the group? If there's only ~10 active people, I hardly call it > CLUG. Nevermind that most new people aren't familiar with mailing lists, > but forums are easier to understand... New users generally know 2 things quite well. The web and e-mail. I have seen no good argument that says that people are better at the web. > I see you miss the point of the web app - the user base is increasing, and > they aren't getting smarter. So now the current members are stupid as well as the new members, is that what your saying. If I joined a list and started seeing comments like this, I would not want to stick around. Revolt all you want against it in your self > righteous fashion, but at least understand why the world will pass you by. This looks like another flame to me. Plus the fact that I wouldn't say that a forum is more technologically advanced than a mailing list. It's just a news group adapted for the web. > I'm fighting because no rebutal of quality has been given, and I see one or > two in support with a tag line of "please don't flame me". Maybe you should > consider why they'd say that rather then ask me to stop because you have > nothing to offer. Actually I have given you valid points (but thanks for yet another insult). If people like you were not running around the list with a flame thrower, maybe people would feel more at ease to speek their mind. > Thank you for coming out - little more prep on your part next time. Well stupid, self righteous, little if any experience, afraid of change, fearmongerer, troll, and prep. You've just got a whole bag of insults for me don't you. Jesse
