Is there a ~/.xsession-errors file? If so, you may post that.
I had a horror of a time with MDK 8.2 to 9.0 upgrade. I've since
reinstalled on a new drive. After months i still can not load X from the
original user of the 8.2 system. I can load X from root (but don't) and
from users created after the 9.0 install. I know others have had the
same problem and have yet to find a fix. Yes, i've deleted all tmp and
~/.* files that look even vaguely problematic.
So, what happens with X from root or from a new user?
Empty quotes are the default to XkbOptions but Just to be safe, post the Keyboard
section of your XF86Config-4.
Here is the tail of my failing .xsession-errors file:
