hmmm.m.. lots of bad, bad KDE related errors here =/

log in on the console and try typing X and then press enter

it should come up with a plain grey X screen. if so, and it doesn't die, then 
the problem isn't with X at all.

if that is the case, then try this: remove ALL the kde rpms (e.g. do a urpme 
kdelibs) and reinstall all the kde rpms (easiest way: cd to the RPMS 
directory on disc one of your MDK install CDs and do a urpmi *kde*rpm)

see if that helps any... i remember lots of people having problems upgrading 
and the easiest thing to do was to remove all the KDE rpms first and install 
the new ones ..

when MDK first released their KDE3 RPMs there were all sorts of upgrade 
problems with them (they botched the upgrade path from KDE2 => KDE3)
