yes, gcc 3.x is slooooooooow. kdelibs/base are already pretty large glops of 
source code as it is, so a slow compiler doesn't help.  

a lack of support for precompiled headers only compounds the problem as gcc 
gets to slowly process every header from scratch that is #included, even if 
it just got through doing that for the last source file it compiled. if you 
look through some of the KDE source files you will notice that there are a 
lot of headers included in most files. =/
