well, MDK isn't SuSe and the migration from one major version to another (e.g.
2.x => 3.x) is always more perilous than from one minor version to another
(e.g. 3.0 => 3.1) ...

depends on how adventerous you are =) it's really far easier to do it from
packages and you will maintain the ease of management if you wait for RPMs,
and those won't take very long I'm sure since SuSe is pretty good in that
regard.
if you do want to compile from source, i'm sure we'd be happy to help you
along, though...
