Thanks Bogi, Jeff & A few Others! The Slack I was going to use was the 8.1 which is pretty new, but upon reflection that may not be the way to go. I do have MDK 8, 8.2 & now 9.0 so that might be the way to go. I have my LInux Format disks and probably a shwack of distros in there. A lot of people seems to think Gentto is pretty sweet and I think I have a version around here somewhere. As far as mainline distros I think I may be tempted to go for Suse (recent version) for my system and MDK 9.0 for fiances system.
Any thoughts on Suse or any other recommendations? It would be a transition machine. My 2K machine is my primar so I do everything on it. I would like my Linux box to start emulating that so that I can eventually ditch windows or put it on the 200Mhz box because I would only be using a couple programs...still thinking of how I want to do things. I do eventuallu want to build a media box and get into home automation. Media box I could see using the 2K because of games and what have you and have it sitting in the living room. Then use linux on server, my priary business machine, fiances machine, etc. Oh...I should mention this as well. I may be loaning my 200 Mhz system to my mom (computer newbie) for a bit so I should take that into account for the distro I choose. She is looking at a new computer for her sefl buut who knows when that will happen? And it would have to be Windows...she wants it for web, email and the grandkids games and stuff. Debian uses .dpkg which about the same as RPM. Slackware uses .tgz which are pretty weak. I think the goal with slack packages was just for the initial install and then you do the rest by compiling from source (? I heard this somewhere...). Debian or Mandrake's package systems make it easier to install stuff and maintain the system afterwards. Slackware is a pretty nice distro and I often use it for servers just because it's simple and doesn't do much for me. On the other hand unless you are really wanting to work at it, I don't think it makes a really nice desktop distro. It doesn't have fancy hardware detection nor does it install all the toys the other distros do. Debian is also fairly comlex to get up and running with but I would argu it is simpler than Slack and you will love being able to type "apt-get install package_name" and just get the package. It's really slick. If you want all the hardware detection and useful setup from day1 you can install Knoppix which is based on debian but comes with all the goodies.
