Having a choice of which mailing list to be on, topics etc could be
beneficial. Although I would have to suggest that if this occurred that we
found our own server (maybe donated in whole or in pieces) to accomodate our
needs. I hate assuming people are willing to do and/or give things.. and I
feel Jeff has been more then gracious enough with having all this kept on his
server as it is.. and for as long as the group has existed..

I honestly could not ask any more of him.. which is why I suggest the group
put together their own server. Maybe at one of the installfests? People could
mention what they could donate and bring it to a meeting, and/or the
installfest (future fest) and we could put the server together there.

The next question would be finding some bandwidth which could potentially
allow for more traffic without sucking the life out of the person and/or
companies own bandwidth.
My servers are available as a place to deal with the mailing lists and website if needed. There is plenty of space and power if needed, as well I'm not restricted by bandwidth costs.

The suggestion has been made about using filters to filter out stuff I'm not interested in. How am I supposed filter topics I don't want to read? I don't see how this could work. For example, if I try to filter out what could be considered "offtopic" and remove all mail with Microsoft, I might loose info about samba or tools that could be used to integrate a windows workstation with linux workstations, which would interest me, whereas installing win98 problems would not... As it is, I use filters to keep track of the different lists I'm subscribed to, and this list by far creates more traffic.

The idea was put forward that splitting the list would cause a decrease in the membership you have now. Those who want to be part of certain discussions would be able to subscribe or not. Its all about choice. You're giving everyone the choice to be involved with certain aspects they are interested in. Having an searchable archive of the lists would allow anyone that changed their interests to search for answers to questions they have to see if they are already answered.

In any case, I'll be happy to continue the way you have it set up. Though I would love to be subscribed to only the topic threads that I'm interested in. Whatever goes, and if you need a server or two to host your stuff on, you can use mine, freely.
