I'm sorry, I didn't mean to misinterpret what you were saying. > How would I have urpmi update from only 8.2 sources... in other words, > where would I find a list of sources for urpmi. This is of course > assuming that all I need is to location the 8.2 version hdlist.cz First you would want to use urpmi.removemedia to remove the 9.0 sources. Then make sure that you have all the sources for 8.2 (I am assuming that you have the full cdrom set). That will let you install apps from the CD. Also make sure that you have an updates source in there. Remember though that most of the updates will be security or bug fixes, not major version jumps. I would recommend adding 2 additional sources. PLF and contribs. This will allow you to install a much greater range of software via urpmi, but most likely it will not contain updates for your current apps that were part of the 8.2 distribution. These commands should work: # urpmi.addmedia contrib ftp://ftp.keystealth.org/pub/Mandrake-old/8.2/contrib/RPMS with synthesis.hdlist2.cz and # urpmi.addmedia plf ftp://plf.chem.yorku.ca/pub/plf/8.2 with hdlist.cz you can also use this command to import the gpg key for the plf packages: # lynx -source http://plf.zarb.org/plf.asc | gpg --import > Forgive me since I am doing this, (updating,) for the first time, so I > am trying to find out as much as I can and understand everything. I would say that with urpmi configured with those sources it can be an invaluable tool to install new software with. Mandrake Update is also a great way to keep your system secure and bug free. However if you add 9.0 or cooker sources then you may be faced with huge lists of deps. that it needs to update. This can be ok, but you will probably find it easier and you will keep your system more stable by either downloading the iso's for 9.0 or the 9.1 beta. These will give you a system that is on the whole relatively up to date if not bleeding edge :-). If you just want to update a package like samba or mozilla I would recommend checking out their websites. Many of these web sites will give you links to wither precompiled binaries for your system or to source tarballs. Mozilla for example will let you download rpms for RedHat, or a GUI installer. You can also search google for binaries if you like. You may be able to mix and match rpms for other distros, it will just be a trial and error type of thing to see how many deps. you will have to install. > After all, if at first I don't succeed, try, try, try, try.......... > you get the idea. ;P~~ Right on! I like your spirit. Jesse
